Alabama Muslim leaders have invited newly sworn-in Sen. Doug Jones to visit a mosque and meet with them, AL.com is reporting.
"We're hoping that he'll come and meet with the Muslim community, sit down and talk, find out about his Muslim constituency," said Khaula Hadeed, Alabama executive director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
The invitation was sent in a letter to Jones by a coalition of 21 Alabama Muslim groups, according to AL.com.
"The Muslim community in Alabama enters the new year with great hope and optimism," Hadeed said. "We expect a return to the politics of dignity, fairness, respect, and mutual understanding."
Jones, a Democrat, was sworn in on Jan. 3 after defeating Republican Roy Moore in a special election in December.
