House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cautioned that if President Donald Trump reopens the country too quickly amid the coronavirus pandemic, he could "make matters worse."
Pelosi told Politico she would hope the scientific community would weigh in if the president is moving too fast.
“I would hope that the scientific community would weigh in and say, ‘You can’t do this, it is only going to make matters worse if you go out too soon,’” she said.
In order to reopen the country, Pelosi said several factors would need to be considered, including widespread testing and safety standards in workplaces.
The president and members of his administration have hinted at plans to begin reopening the economy in May.
In an interview on CNBC, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said opening businesses in May was a possibility if the president “feels comfortable with the medical issues."
Pelosi also suggested the House of Representatives may not return to Washington, D.C. on April 20. A sixth member of Congress, Rep. Neal Dunn, R-Fla., tested positive for coronavirus.
