House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told members of her party to prepare to fight for the Affordable Care Act in January, The Hill reported.
Pelosi, in a letter to House Democrats, said this has been "a difficult year for our nation."
"In January, we will face a new Congress and a new administration. House Democrats stand ready to fight vigorously for America's hard-working families," she added.
President Barack Obama's administration announced Wednesday that 6.4 million people have signed up for healthcare coverage through Healthcare.gov, an improvement on last years enrollment numbers.
"Today's enrollment numbers confirm that doomsday predictions about the marketplace are not bearing out," Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell said, according to CBS News.
"As we prepare for the first week in January, we are focusing on protecting the Affordable Care Act, and protecting what the ACA does for Medicare and our seniors."
The minority leader announced plans for a "national day of action with events across the country" with Democratic senators and governors to support the effort.
"In the days ahead, let each of us find renewal in the love of our families and friends, and in the spirit of the season," she said. "We will return to Washington, refreshed and ready to demonstrate that, from day one, Democrats are ready to fight."
