Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the GOP tax bill was "brazen theft" from the American middle class," The Washington Free Beacon reports.

"This GOP tax scam is simply theft – monumental, brazen theft – from the American middle-class, and from every person who aspires to reach it," Pelosi said on the House floor Tuesday. "The GOP tax scam is not a vote for an investment in growth or jobs, it is a vote to install a permanent plutocracy in our nation. They'll be cheering that later."

The House passed a sweeping $1.5 trillion tax bill that slashes tax rates for corporations and provides new breaks for private businesses and reorganizes the individual tax code. The Senate is expected to follow suit as early as Tuesday night.

No Democrats supported the tax bill, and 12 Republicans also voted against the measure.

President Donald Trump has called the bill "one of the great gifts to the middle income people of this country that they've ever gotten for Christmas," and House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., touted the bill's purpose as a "middle-class tax cut, to give people more take-home pay."

Pelosi disagreed.

"It betrays the future and betrays the aspirations of our children. It demands — it morally demands — a 'no' vote from every member of this House of the people," Pelosi said before the bill passed.
