The national race after the major party conventions is lining up to be a close one, according to the first Fox News national poll among likely voters released Sunday.
Democrat Joe Biden does lead by 5 points, 51% to 46% support for Trump in the poll, but often national polls do not reflect the electoral college race because of so many Democrat voters in large, deep-blue states like California, New York, and Illinois. The largest deep-blue states have seen far slower growth than the largest red states in the past decade.
"Despite the often tumultuous events of the day, campaigns are often about partisan homecoming," Republican pollster Daron Shaw said. "Trump may be benefiting from this dynamic. It looks like Republican-leaning undecided voters have come around, both in the ballot and his job ratings."
Following the 2020 election buzz, likely mail-in voters strongly back Biden (71%), while likely in-person voters favor Trump (58%) in the poll.
The leaders on the largest 2020 election issues, according to the poll:
- Economy: Trump up 5 points.
- Bringing the country together: Biden up 13 points.
- Racial inequality: Biden up 12 points.
- Coronavirus response: Biden up 8.
- Healthcare: Biden up 8.
- Supreme Court nominations: Biden up 7.
- Immigration: Biden up 7.
- Policing and criminal justice: Biden up 7.
- Maintaining law and order: Biden up 2.
Fox News interviewed 1,311 registered voters nationwide and 1,191 likely voters Sept. 7-10, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points for both groups.
