The New York Observer endorsed Donald Trump for president, while acknowledging that the paper's owner is Trump's son-in-law, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Observer owner Jared Kushner is the husband of Trump's daughter Ivanka.

That's not a reason to endorse someone for president, the New York Observer said in an editorial. "Giving millions of disenfranchised Americans a renewed sense of purpose and opportunity is."

Trump's rise toward the candidacy is powered by "profound alienation, anger, and disillusionment of millions of Americans," the Observer said.

The paper's editors said they endorse Trump because "he has demonstrated that he alone among the Republican field can attract new voters to the tent and shine fresh perspective on issues that badly need attention."

Trump sent out a statement calling the endorsement "a great honor," the Wall Street Journal reports. "It shows great honesty and courage, something our country is sorely lacking," Trump said.

A spokesperson for Trump didn't say whether or not the front-runner had met with the Observer's editorial board or if Kushner was involved in the paper's endorsement.
