Newt Gingrich has made an extraordinary prediction that Democrats will suffer a major shellacking at the polls in 2018 with the GOP gaining an even tighter stronghold on Capitol Hill.
"The great political surprise of 2018 will be the size of the Republican victory," Gingrich, who served as GOP House Speaker from 1995 to 1999, wrote in a column for Fox News.
"After members of the elite media have spent two years savaging President Trump, lying about Republican legislation, and reassuring themselves that Republican defeat was inevitable, the size of the GOP victory in 2018 will be an enormous shock."
Gingrich said he believes Americans "will be positively surprised and pleased by the degree to which Republicans kept their word and actually put more money in taxpayer pockets'' as a result of the controversial tax reform bill just signed into law.
"In fact, the stage is being set for a definitive election … If Republicans can learn to tell the truth better than the elite media and Democrats lie, the GOP will win an astonishing victory in 2018," he wrote.
Gingrich has made bold political predictions in the past, although not all have been accurate.
Just before the 2012 presidential election in which Mitt Romney challenged incumbent Barack Obama, Gingrich predicted an election landslide for the former Massachusetts governor.
"My personal guess is you'll see a Romney landslide, 53 percent-plus . . . in the popular vote, 300 electoral votes-plus," Gingrich told Fox News at the time.
But Obama ended up trouncing Romney in both the popular vote and the Electoral College.
