In the wake of the disastrous loss in Alabama, Republicans need to come together after the New Year on a new strategy to fend off the impending Democratic wave in 2018, Newt Gingrich warned in a column for Fox News.
Gingrich laid out the problem statement for Republicans:
"Republicans are divided: Alabama was a GOP civil war; many Republicans are unhappy with their leaders in Washington; and independents are being alienated by both President Trump and congressional Republicans," he wrote.
First step, Gingrich writes: Get the tax cuts passed now.
Second step: Start plotting a new strategy in January.
"Republicans need to spend January developing a new strategy capable of changing current patterns and maximizing their chances to keep the House," he wrote. "They also must increase their Senate majority by five or six, so it will be strong enough to keep the majority in 2020, when the playing field will favor Democrats.
"Every Republican, beginning with the president and vice president, needs to understand what a disaster a House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer would be.
"By June, it may be too late to course-correct. Avoiding a Democratic wave election requires action now," Gingrich concluded.
