Even if President Donald Trump said he wanted to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, that's not a crime, and the news story published about it in The New York Times points to a sense of desperation from the left, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday.

"Historians will look back on this period as schizophrenic insanity," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "On the one hand, you have genuine FBI Information coming out about clearly covering up for Hillary Clinton in ways that are astonishing...on the other hand you have a non-story about a non-event."

According to the Times, President Donald Trump ordered that Mueller be fired last June but backed off after White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to resign,

If Trump didn't fire Mueller, and even if he got "really angry" and said he would like to fire him, he didn't end up removing the former FBI director, Gingrich pointed out.

"The idea that the president somehow is culpable of not liking Mueller and that is somehow going to be, you know, an obstruction of justice, it tells you how desperate the left is getting," said Gingrich. "They really want Trump with Russia. They can't get that. They wanted some kind of collusion with the Russians. They can't get that."

And every reason that Mueller was picked as a special counsel has "disappeared," said Gingrich.

"What's left? A whole bunch of very high-priced democratic lawyers hanging around with Mueller who wasted a year of their life," he said. "They have to find somebody for something. My prediction is they will indict somebody just to be able to go home and say they did something. But the truth is, the original intent of appointing him has disappeared, nobody seriously believes it."

Meanwhile, Gingrich praised Trump for his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, saying it was "extraordinary" and given before a "bigger than ever" gathering this year.

"There were 1,600 people in that room," he said. "They represented many of the most powerful corporations in the world. Many of them have already announced billions and billions of dollars of investment in the United States, after the tax cut was passed. The president was who he is. He was coherent, articulate, direct. He stands for America, he cares about America. "
