Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has lauded President Donald Trump for cutting off most security aid to Pakistan, chiding “elites” for being “shocked” at the bare-knuckles tactic.
In an interview with radio host John Catsimatidis aired Sunday on “The Cats Roundtable,” the Georgia Republican declared that Trump’s freeze shows Pakistan that “if you kick us in the shin, we’re not going to pay you.”
"It has so thoroughly shocked the elites that we actually are going to protect America, and defend America, and that we're actually going to render judgement," Gingrich said.
"That is such a shocking moment for a lot of our elites that they don't know how to deal with it,” he added.
The Trump administration announced last week it would suspend nearly all security aid to Pakistan, reportedly affecting as much as $1.3 billion in annual aid — and possibly marking the end of an alliance with Pakistan in the region.
The United States has sent over $33 billion in foreign aid to Pakistan since 2002, The Hill reported.
