National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre has called for Americans to join the organization to counter "the forces that conspired to keep Donald Trump out of the White House" who are "coming together to sabotage his administration.
"And they will spend whatever it takes to cripple his plans and inflict their revenge," LaPierre, also the association's executive vice president, said in a video released on Wednesday. "Donald Trump will need every ounce of energy we can muster — and he has no more powerful ally than the NRA."
The organization endorsed Trump early in the presidential race, in May, breaking with longstanding tradition of waiting until later in the campaign before announcing its support.
"We saw through the media deception and recognized him for who he was: the most openly pro-Second Amendment presidential candidate in history," LaPierre said.
The NRA spent "tens of millions of dollars on TV and Internet ads, mobilized our ground forces and put the full weight of our organization behind Donald Trump," he added.
"When Election Day came, NRA members and gun owners delivered the greatest political upset in American history.
"Make no mistake," LaPierre continued. "This election was a grass-roots rejection of the elite class that wants to rule America.
"And the only organization that has fought that fight without apology is the National Rifle Association of America."
Saying that "the time for celebration is over," LaPierre declared that "our time is now" and that "this is our historic moment to go on offense and restore American greatness.
"We are Donald Trump's strongest, most unflinching ally," he said. "The powerful partner he needs to get things done on behalf of American freedom."
