Donald Trump has turned his back on some the Republican Party's "brightest stars" as he moves closer to picking his vice-presidential running mate.
The New York Times reports that such well-regarded GOP up-and-comers as Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina are not under consideration.
"Mr. Trump has reaffirmed his determination to go his own way, ignoring the conventional impulses of the Republican establishment," The Times' Alexander Burns writes.
"It is a mark, too, of Mr. Trump's extraordinary isolation within the party, even as he is poised to claim its nomination, that there is no clamor among its most popular and diverse young officeholders to enlist one of their own in the race against Hillary Clinton …"
Among those Republican names that have been mentioned in Trump circles are: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn.
Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, is expected to announce his pick this week.
