Conservatives Back Obama's Tea Party Cousin in Senate Race

Tuesday, 10 December 2013 12:33 PM EST

The Senate Conservatives Fund has endorsed tea party activist Milton Wolf, President Barack Obama's distant cousin, for a Senate primary challenge against incumbent Republican Pat Roberts in Kansas next year.

"Dr. Milton Wolf is a principled conservative who will fight to stop the massive spending, bailouts, and debt that are bankrupting our country," SCF Executive Director Matt Hoskins said.

"He's not a career politician. He's a doctor who understands exactly why Obamacare must be repealed. Kansas Republicans deserve a real choice this election and Dr. Wolf gives them a chance to send someone new to Washington who will shake things up and bring about real change."

Wolf has been an outspoken critic of Obama and his signature healthcare reform law, the Affordable Care Act, and "its affects on the practice of medicine", according to the SFC.

In fact, the doctor, who is Obama's second cousin once removed, slammed his estranged family member last month on Fox News’ The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson.

"They say you cannot choose your own family, but you can choose to rise up and stop your family from destroying America," he told Carlson.

The SFC endorsement is being viewed as another possible sign of the tea party's rift with the GOP establishment, which has also been highlighted by the decision on Monday by Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman to take on Republican Sen. John Cornyn for the Senate primary because the incumbent GOP senator "undermined Sen. Ted Cruz's fight to stop Obamacare."

Wolf, who grew up in a small farming community in Kansas, has never run for political office before, but chose to run for the U.S. Senate because he believes America is threatened by politicians in Washington who are bankrupting the country, according to SCF.

The father-of-two, married to his wife Karrie for 22 years, attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine and currently practices diagnostic radiology, including mammography, in Kansas City.

Roberts, 77, is seeking his fourth six-year term in the Senate and has worked in Washington as either a congressional aide or a member of Congress for nearly a half-century.

The contentious race for the August 5th primary began in earnest last week when Roberts’ executive campaign manager Leroy Towns filed a complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee against the challenger, claiming that he hasn’t yet filed a required financial disclosure form.

But Wolf spokesman Ben Hartman said the challenger will file the form soon, within a grace period that’s typically given to new Senate candidates. The Wolf campaign also cited 16 instances since 2000 in which the Federal Election Commission questioned items in Roberts’ campaign finance reports.
