Sabato: Virginia to Decide Obama's Fate in 2012

By    |   Monday, 17 October 2011 06:11 PM EDT

University of Virginia political expert Larry J. Sabato says President Barack Obama’s political future may hinge on how Old Dominion voters cast their ballots in 2012.

“Virginia’s going to be an early indication of election night,” he said. “Virginia gave a larger percentage to Barack Obama than Florida or Ohio. If Obama can’t win Virginia for a second time, I don’t see how he carries Florida or Ohio. And, if he loses all of those key states, and North Carolina as well, how does he win?”

Sabato says that means Virginia could serve as the canary in President Obama’s coal mine.

“Virginia has become a bellwether,” Sabato said in an exclusive Newsmax.TV interview. “And who could have imagined it? It was so heavily Republican for so many years. But Virginia has been transformed by the enormous growth in Northern Virginia.”

But Sabato said North Carolina, Ohio, and Florida will have important roles to play as well.
