Rep. Billy Long, R-Mo., announced Monday he is against the American Health Care Act, earning him a reprimand from conservatives.
"Congressman Billy Long has voted at least four times to repeal Obamacare, but now, when it counts, and President Trump is ready to sign the bill, Billy has flip-flopped to defend Obamacare," Club for Growth President David McIntosh said Tuesday, according to The Hill.
Long explained his position in a statement to The Hill: "I have always stated that one of the few good things about Obamacare is that people with preexisting conditions would be covered."
Long singles out Rep. Tom MacArthur's amendment to the bill, which he claims "strips away any guarantee that preexisting conditions would be covered and affordable."
The Club for Growth released an ad last week thanking MacArthur for his work to repeal and replace Obamacare.
"Congressman MacArthur has been at the forefront of finding a way to repeal and replace Obamacare, even while many moderate Republicans have refused to negotiate," McIntosh said in a statement. "His work with Congressman Mark Meadows has produced a compromise that we are able to support, and we hope his constituents will recognize the work Rep. MacArthur has done to move Congress closer to getting rid of Obamacare and lowering the cost of health insurance for many Americans."
McIntosh hit back Tuesday at Long for regurgitating "liberal talking points" which "distort the truth."
"Billy Long may want to keep Obamacare, but his constituents who are trapped with skyrocketing insurance premiums should call his office and tell him to keep his promise and support the GOP plan to repeal and replace Obamacare," McIntosh added.
