Gov. O'Malley 'Seriously Considering' White House Run

Tuesday, 05 August 2014 07:47 AM EDT

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has confirmed that he’s "seriously considering" joining the Democratic race for the White House in 2016.

O’Malley told Fusion’s Jorge Ramos that he plans to take on presumed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton because the country needs to make "better choices."

"I am seriously considering running in 2016," O’Malley said. "But the most important politics of all is to govern well, and to govern truthfully. So I am focused on doing everything I can to be an effective governor of Maryland and to serve my people well."

The former Baltimore mayor’s White House aspirations are likely to cause some tension with his party’s establishment, although he attempted to downplay any possible future friction, Fusion reported.

"I have certainly cherished my relationship and working relationship not only with Secretary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, but also with President [Barack] Obama," he said.

"I love my country, but I believe our country’s best days are still ahead of us. I also believe that we need to make better choices as a people, choices that not only reflect the goodness of who we are but a better future that we are desirous of our kids."

Last month, the two-term governor had a run-in with the Obama administration when he balked at plans to shelter illegal immigrant children at a facility in his state.

In his potential quest for the presidency, O’Malley has already visited states of Iowa and New Hampshire, where the first presidential contests will occur, while he’s also been raising money for Democratic candidates and promoting his liberal credentials, Fusion said.

O'Malley also revealed that he’s following in Hillary Clinton’s footsteps and writing his memoirs, although he would not say when his book would be published.

"I’m always writing," O'Malley said. "In the process of looking at this, you do a lot of reflecting and so stay tuned."
