The House Oversight Committee is now looking into the travel practices of the Trump administration, having sent out 24 letters Tuesday to various federal agencies.
The reports about the travel habits of Health and Human Services secretary Tom Price has gotten the attention of Oversight Chairman Trey Gowdy and ranking Democrat, Elijah Cummings.
"Official travel on the part of federal employees must be 'by the most expeditious means of transportation practicable' and 'commensurate with the nature and purpose of the [employee's] duties, and by no means should include personal use," the pair wrote in their letter to Price.
Price reportedly racked up $300,000 in costs to taxpayers for taking private jets, though the secretary has contended it is legitimate travel to get to his destinations in a timely manner.
The congressmen want Price — and each of the 23 other agencies — to provide three sets of documents by Oct. 10:
- "Each usage of a government-owned aircraft."
- "Produce policies around travel."
- "Each usage of a private, non-commercial aircraft."
Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin came under scrutiny for a trip on a military plane to Fort Knox and for inquiring — but being denied — about traveling on a government plane for his honeymoon.
Education secretary Betsy DeVos travels on her own private plane but foots the cost herself.
