Donald Trump's path to victory in Tuesday's election starts with Ohio, North Carolina and Florida — which he will win, former White House communications director Pat Buchanan said — even if oddmakers are still favoring Hillary Clinton.
"I think where the election sits right now is that Trump is closing, and he is gaining, but the question is whether he has sufficient momentum to take him over the top on Tuesday," Buchanan told John Catsimatidis on Saturday, per The Hill.
"I think he does have a path to victory, but I think the oddsmakers in Vegas . . . are still betting on Hillary Rodham Clinton."
The political commentator sees a divide between the political parties that must be avoided by electing a Republican president and Congress.
"[Trump] is going to just win the three crucial states in the Republican base — and that’s Ohio, North Carolina, Florida," Buchanan told Catsimatidis, per The Hill. "Then if he picks up Iowa and Nevada . . . and gets the normal Republican states, I think he is within reach of victory."
The Senate race is a "50/50" toss up right now, too, Buchanan added, but a Republican victory there is needed to unite what has been a fractured party this election cycle.
"There’s no reason why the Republicans can't get together if Trump wins," Buchanan said. "There is a common agenda.
"The problem . . . I see is the personal differences — and a lot of them dating back to some pretty rough primaries."
