Pat Roberts: Kansas Voters Know Orman Is 'Liberal Democrat'

By    |   Tuesday, 14 October 2014 05:32 PM EDT

Incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas says it isn't hard to figure out the recent upswing in his polling numbers against independent Greg Orman: Kansans know Orman is really a liberal Democrat.

"He is posing as an independent, but he's not," Roberts said Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto."

"He ran against me as a Democrat in 2008," Roberts said.

Democrats pulled their candidate, Chad Taylor, in what Roberts and others think was a bid to oust him in a year when the GOP looks poised to gain control of the Senate.

Orman has criticized both parties and hasn't said which side he would caucus with if elected. But Roberts pointed out that Orman has donated about $174,000 to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"So, he's going to caucus with Harry Reid," Roberts said. "I think most Kansans understand that."

Roberts also said the fact that Democratic mega-donor George Soros' son, Jonathan Soros, is holding a fundraiser for Orman also proves where his opponent's allegiances lie.

"I've never seen the Soros family support an independent. I have seen them support many liberal Democrats," he said. "I think that behind all this they had a meeting, and they considered Kansas the social experiment, if you will, to see if they could elect an independent."

But he added, "You can't pull the wool over the eyes of Kansans. They know what they see, and they know who to trust."
