Former Rep. Ron Paul offered some unconventional advice to his son Rand Thursday, telling the Kentucky senator that he should step carefully if intends to run for president.

"I would say be very cautious, you could get elected," The Texas Republican quipped Thursday night to Jay Leno on NBC's "The Tonight Show."

Ron Paul, who has run for president three times, said he hasn't talked to his son about the possibility that he might decide to follow in his father's footsteps in another three years or so.

But he sounded like he expects the senator to run.

Asked by Leno, who he thinks the 2016 GOP will be, Paul answered, "Probably somebody who lives in Texas — I mean used to live in Texas, lives in Kentucky now. He’ll probably end up getting it."

Leno also asked the former congressman if his son is turning into a moderate, given his recent praise of President Barack Obama's efforts to reach a diplomatic solution over Syria's chemical weapons rather than use military force.

"If I call him a moderate, I’ll destroy his political career," Paul joked. But he added that there are other issues on which his son Rand agrees with Obama, including entering negotiations with Iran.
