Paul Ryan: GOP Has Found Consensus on Tax Reform

By    |   Friday, 28 July 2017 09:43 AM EDT

Republicans have reached common ground on tax reform, according to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

“The aspects of tax reform that we agree on, we wanted to make sure that we could still achieve those things without a cash flow tax or a border adjustment tax. Once we realized that that is viable, then we agreed we need to go on a common template,” Ryan said.

“Getting consensus between the White House, the Senate, and the House on a way forward on tax reform makes it that much more of a viable enterprise. I feel much more confident that we are going to stick the landing on tax reform because we have now said we have consensus. Here’s the framework. Let’s go get it done,” Ryan said in a Fox Business interview with Maria Bartiromo.

“It is more important for us than anything that we get tax reform done, because we think it is absolutely critical for strong economic growth,” Ryan told Bartiromo.

The only way to get to three-percent growth is through tax reform, the speaker said. “The thing about tax reform is that we, as Republicans, especially now, agree on how to do it,” he said.

Ryan pointed out the differences between Republican opinions on healthcare reform and tax reform. “Healthcare is a good example. There’s not a complete consensus on how best to do healthcare reform. On tax reform, we have that consensus,” he said.

The battle over healthcare reform has affected the tax reform discussion, Ryan said at another point in the interview with Bartiromo.

“We looked at healthcare and said let’s make sure that we do tax reform better and differently… we’ve had meeting after meeting after meeting to make sure we see it the same way and on common ground,” Ryan said.

The House of Representatives abandoned the border adjustment tax to clear the way for consensus on a “perfectly viable” way to get tax reform done, Ryan said.
