Pelosi Raised Record $35.5 Million for Democrats in 2013

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi raised more than $35 million for the Democrats in 2013, a record figure for the former House Speaker who hopes to take back that position after this year's congressional elections.

The $35.5 million the California Democrat brought in came from fundraisers she headlined in 50 different cities. Almost $27 million of the total was transferred to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, a Pelosi aide told Politico. By comparison, Pelosi raised $27 million in 2011, the year before the 2012 midterm elections, and in 2009 and 2007 her fundraising efforts brought in $18 million each year on behalf of her party.

"Nobody works harder than Leader Pelosi to make sure House Democrats have the resources we need to bring leaders to Congress who will dedicate themselves to strengthening the middle class instead of protecting special interests," Rep. Steve Israel of New York, who heads the DCCC, told Politico.

In 2013, The DCCC raised almost $14 million more than the National Republican Congressional Committee, which brought in $56.5 million compared to the $70.2 million raised by the Democrats.

Nonetheless, Republicans are confident that they can hold on to their House majority, given the problematic rollout of Obamacare. Democrats need to pick up at least 17 seats to regain control of the chamber they lost to Republicans in 2010.
