Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic rival Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., both avoided answering a question about the age and relative health of their respective running mates during the vice presidential debate on Wednesday.
Pence instead returned to address a previous question about a potential vaccine for the novel coronavirus while Harris referred to the day Democratic nominee for president and former Vice President Joe Biden asked her to be his running mate.
The vice president took his turn at responding to moderator Susan Page’s question, who pointed out that Biden would be 78 and Trump 74 on Inauguration Day, by pointing to Harris’ previous comment that if a virus became available by the end of the year she would refuse to take it if recommended by President Donald Trump.
Pence accused Harris of undermining the confidence in the medical research community, calling it “unconscionable.”
Harris, likewise, refused to address Biden’s age and health status, expounding on her experience as a former prosecutor.
"Joe and I were raised in a very similar way," she said. "We were raised with values that are about hard work, about the value and the dignity of public service, and about the importance of fighting for the dignity for all people."
