Rep. Charlie Dent: GOP Facing 'Hurricane-Force Wind' in Elections

(CNN's "New Day")

Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., said the results of the Pennsylvania special election Tuesday showed that Republicans would be facing "hurricane-force wind" in upcoming elections.

"I think most Republicans realize we're running into a very serious headwind . . . hurricane-force wind," Dent said Wednesday on CNN's "New Day."

"It’s coming, and we have to be ready for it," Dent said.

The special election pitted Democrat Conor Lamb against Republican Rick Saccone for an open House seat. Unofficial results Wednesday morning showed Lamb having a lead of 641 votes.

"Some of our members in the marginal districts are better prepared for these fights than, frankly, some members in safer seats," Dent added.

"I tell you what, if you're a Republican member in a pretty safe seat, like this one was, that's where I'd be nervous, because those members are not used to these types of competitive . . . in these competitive situations," the congressman said.

Congress members in districts that could swing in either direction are not the biggest concern for Republicans, Dent said.

"They know they're in for a fight," he said.

"It's these guys in these safer seats, I think this is a wakeup call for them," Dent told "New Day."
