Democrat and former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg blasted President Donald Trump's claim that the only way he will lose the election is if it is rigged as "an attack on America."
During a Tuesday appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America," Buttigieg called the president's statement "bad for democracy across the world."
"Since when do you preemptively call into question the legitimacy of an election that you say, by definition won't be legitimate unless you win? You gotta understand — that's not just an attack on the Democratic Party. That's an attack on America," the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor said.
"When the president of the most consequential democracy on Earth in the last 2,000 years does something like that, that's bad for democracy around the world," he added.
While campaigning in Wisconsin on Monday, Trump said the "only way we're going to lose this election is if the election is rigged."
The president has alleged that mail-in voting will lead to a fraudulent election. Democrats are pushing for more mail-in voting options amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"President Trump has realized that if the American people vote," Buttigieg said.
He also addressed the president's tweet ripping former first lady Michelle Obama over her speech during the first night of the Democratic National Convention.
Trump tweeted Tuesday that he wouldn't be in the White House "if it weren't for the job done by your husband, Barack Obama."
"I guess when we go high he goes low," Buttigieg said, using the former first lady's motto.
He said the first night of the convention conveyed a unified message of: "We've got to vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the sake of the country."
