House Republicans attached $1.6 billion in funding for the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico in an attachment to a defense appropriations bill, according to Rep. Pete Sessions, R- Texas, in a Thursday Fox News interview.
"The Texas delegation has been pushing Congress to make sure that we protected not just our southern borders, but that we did the right thing to support President [Donald] Trump and his ability to ensure that we build the necessary wall or other parts that will protect this border," said Sessions, the chairman of the House Rules Committee.
Hopefully, Sessions said, the bill will now be moving on to the Senate. "We're proud of what we've done," he added.
"This actually comes as a direct request from the Border Patrol agents and those people who are trying to protect not only the United States from illegals entering this country, but also drug cartels and lots of traffic along our southern border … to protect it, we're going to have to get it all the way through the Senate," he said.
"This was a common sense idea, not just a great idea from Donald Trump."
Sessions said Monday the amendment that provided the border wall money was "self-executing," according to NBC News. "We are going to comply with allowing the president to have things he wants."
