Rep. Peter King said Tuesday that Donald Trump was wrong for ripping the Republican Party after losing to Ted Cruz in Colorado on Saturday.
"Each state has its own set of rules,"
the New York Republican told Wolf Blitzer on CNN. "It's not as if they're being changed to hurt Donald Trump.
"He really dropped the ball, for instance, in Colorado by not having his people on the ground at those local conventions," King said.
Trump slammed the GOP on Tuesday,
calling its delegate system "absolutely rigged" and saying that the party "should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this kind of crap to happen."
King, 72, who was first elected to the House in 1992, countered that the Republican Party is "a private institution. It's a private entity.
"Each state has its own rules," King continued. "Some have caucuses. Some have primaries.
"The Wisconsin primary allows Democrats, independents to vote. Republicans in New York only allow Republicans to vote in their primary."
King added that so far Trump has "gotten 37 percent of the popular vote. He is going to get 45 percent of the delegates as of now.
"He's doing better than his percentages would indicate," King said. "These rules were in place before Donald Trump ever got into the contest at all."
