Nearly two-thirds of Americans oppose the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico, a direct contradiction to Donald Trump's policies on immigration.
The Pew Research Center survey finds that 61 percent of Americans are against the wall, which has been a focal point of Trump's presidential campaign. Just 36 percent of those polled are in favor of it.
Among political parties, 84 percent of Democrats are against the wall and 63 percent of Republicans are for it. Ninety-one percent of adults who strongly support Trump are for the wall.
The survey found other examples of where U.S. adults have opinions on immigration issues that clash with Trump's, including:
- 76 percent think illegal immigrants are as hard-working and honest as American citizens
- 67 percent think illegal immigrants are no more likely to commit serious crimes than Americans citizens are
- 71 percent said illegal immigrants perform jobs Americans don't want
- 45 percent said the issues of providing a path to citizenship, better border security, and better enforcement of immigration laws should have equal priority
Trump has stepped away from his original position of wanting to deport every illegal immigrant living in the U.S., saying Wednesday night he essentially supports a path to legal residence for illegals with no criminal records.
Critics say Trump's updated immigration plan is no different than that of Jeb Bush, whom Trump once berated on the subject during a debate. Bush dropped out of the presidential race in February.
