Sixty-two percent of Republicans support President Donald Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, while only 10 percent believe he should have allowed him to stay on, a Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.
Here are the survey highlights:
- 35 percent of all those polled say Trump was right to remove Comey; 33 percent say he should have allowed him to continue, while 32 percent did not have an opinion.
- 58 percent of Democrats opposed Comey's dismissal, while 16 percent believe Trump was right to remove the FBI director and 26 percent have no opinion.
- 30 percent of independents believe Trump was right, while 28 percent say Comey should have stayed and 42 percent are undecided.
- 74 percent of voters say they have heard about the firing, compared to 26 percent who say they hadn't heard much about it or nothing at all.
"Voters are divided on who should lead the investigation into Trump's campaign and its connections to Russian actors, but there is general support for removing the probe from the political process," Steven Shepard of Politico wrote.
"Just 22 percent say the new FBI director 'should continue the investigation.' But 36 percent of voters want a special prosecutor to be appointed, and another 24 percent think 'a bipartisan, independent commission created by Congress should handle the investigation.'"
The poll surveyed 1,731 registered voters, beginning late Tuesday, Politico reported. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
