A majority of voters do not approve of the Republican tax plan that is in the works, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
The results:
- 55 percent disapprove of the GOP tax plan, compared to 26 percent who approve it.
Voters were asked about voting for House or Senate members that support the plan.
- 43 percent said they are less likely to vote for those who support the plan, while 18 percent said they are more likely to vote for supporters of the plan.
- 35 percent said support for the tax plan does not matter to them.
Breaking down the results by party affiliation, 66 percent of Republicans support the plan —but every other poll breakdown, by party, gender, education, age, and racial group, show majority disapproval.
"American voters pan the tax plan making its way through Congress towards President Donald Trump's desk — and warn candidates it could be a poison pill at the polling place," said Tim Malloy, the Quinnipiac poll assistant director.
The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,211 voters around the U.S. with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, according to the poll report.
On Wednesday, House and Senate Republicans forged an agreement on the tax overhaul plan, according to The Associated Press.
