Donald Trump is closing on Hillary Clinton, cutting her lead in half over in the last month, a new poll shows.
The Monmouth University survey released Monday shows Clinton with a three-point lead among voters nationally, and a 2 point edge among likely voters — down from a six-point lead among all voters and a 7-point lead with likely voters in a June poll.
Here's the breakdown;
- Clinton: 43 percent
- Trump: 40 percent
- Libertarian Gary Johnson: 5 percent
- Green Party candidate Jill Stein: 1 percent
- Other: 2 percent
In the June tally, the support broke down like this:
- Clinton: 42 percent
- Trump: 36 percent
- Johnson: 9 percent
- Stein: 4 percent
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percent.
The latest averaging of national polls has Clinton ahead of Trump by 3.2 percentage points,
Real Clear Politics reports –=— while on June 27, her lead was about seven points.
"Clinton still leads, but Trump is closing the margin," Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement.
"The next two weeks will be crucial to determining which direction this trend goes."
The poll also finds the selection of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as Trump's running mate hasn't had a big impact:
- 11 percent say they're now more likely to support the Republican ticket because Pence is on it
- 10 percent say they're less likely
- 76 percent say Pence has no impact on their vote either way.
Similarly, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders's endorsement of Clinton has had little impact:
- 17 percent say they're more likely to support Clinton
- 9 percent are less likely
- 73 percent say it's had no impact either way.
