The nation appears to be sharply divided among political lines over the question if the Russian government helped Donald Trump win the presidential election.

The results show 71 percent of Democrats saying it is likely and 71 percent of Republicans declaring it to be unlikely, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll released on Wednesday.

Overall, 47 percent of all likely voters think it is unlikely Moscow helped Trump win, while 45 percent say it is likely.

The CIA announced that Russian interference in the American presidential elections was likely, although it offered no proof for the accusation.

Other results of the survey indicate:

Among independents:

  • 46 percent say that it is unlikely that the Russian government helped Trump win.
  • 40 percent think Moscow did meddle in the election.

There was also a divide among gender:

  • 52 percent of males thought it unlikely the Russian government was involved.
  • 41 percent of women who said it was unlikely.

Age also appeared to be a determining factor:

  • 56 percent of those older than 65 said the scenario was unlikely.
  • 52 percent of those younger than 40 thought it was likely the Russian government did help Trump win.

Among those who supported Trump in the elections:

  • 72 percent say Islamic terrorism is a bigger threat to the U.S.
  • Only 4 percent say that about Russia
  • 23 percent thinking both threats are about the same.

Among those who supported Hillary Clinton for president:

  • 30 percent see radical Islamic terrorism as the bigger threat to the U.S.
  • 20 percent say Russia is the bigger threat.
  • 45 percent thinking both threats are about the same.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted Dec. 12 to 13 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.
