President Donald Trump’s approval rating has climbed back to near the levels of his first 100 days in office, according to a new poll.

The Washington Post/ABC News survey finds his approval at 40 percent — up from a 36 percent job approval rating in a January poll. Over half, 56 percent disapprove.

Overall, according to the poll, the president has gained ground in the demographic groups that were important in his 2016 campaign; with 59 percent of Americans living in rural areas — and 65 percent of white voters there — backing his job performance.

Around the nation, 54 percent of whites also say they approve of Trump's job performance; 79 percent of racial and ethnic minorities disapprove of the job Trump is doing.

In other findings, the poll found:

  • 46 percent approve of Trump's handling of the economy; 48 percent disapprove.
  • 61 percent have an unfavorable view of Trump "as a person," with 32 percent saying they have a favorable view of him as a person.

The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percent.

According to an averaging of polls by Real Clear Politics, Trump’s job approval is at 42.8 percent, with 53.7 percent disapproving. His approval in April 2017 hit as high as 53 percent, Real Clear Politics averaging showed.
