Forty-eight percent of people living in the South approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing in the White House, compared to 51 percent who disapprove, an NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll reveals.
That's higher than the president's nationwide approval of 43 percent, according to the survey.
The poll surveyed adults living in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
The survey breaks down like this:
- 69 percent say migrants should be given the opportunity to attain legal status, compared to 28 percent who say they should be deported.
- 55 percent say they support allowing gay couples to marry legally, compared to 42 percent who do not.
- 57 percent say they would pay higher taxes to improve public schools, compared to 41 percent who would not.
- 15 percent believe race relations are improving; 34 percent say they are getting worse and 49 percent say they are staying the same.
- 61 percent oppose removing Confederate monuments and statues from public areas, while 36 percent favor their removal.
- 21 percent say they trust the federal government at least most of the time; 31 percent say about half of the time; 26 percent say some of the time and 20 percent say almost never.
NBC News reported the region's political views are more nuanced and moderate than many might expect.
Here are some highlights from individual states:
- 57 percent of those in Mississippi approve of Trump's job performance, while 40 disapprove. It his strongest ratings in the region.
- 52 percent of Alabamians approve of recently elected Democratic Sen. Doug Jones, compared to 40 percent who disapprove.
- 48 percent of those in Tennessee approve of retiring Republican Sen. Bob Corker, while 47 percent disapprove.
The poll, conducted March 12-25, surveyed 4,132 adults in the region. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
