Fifty-two percent of voters say it was inappropriate for Donald Trump Jr. to meet with an attorney linked to the Russian government, while 23 percent said they had no problem with it, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll revealed.

Here are the highlights from the survey:

  • 44 percent of Republicans said the meeting was appropriate, while 24 percent said it was not.
  • 8 percent of Democrats had no problem with the meeting, compared to 80 percent who said it was inappropriate
  • 19 percent of independents said the meeting was appropriate, while 50 percent said it was not.
  • 40 percent of all those polled said President Donald Trump has been "very truthful" or "somewhat truthful" when it comes to any alleged coordination between the Russian government and his 2016 campaign, and 46 percent said he has not been "too truthful" or "not truthful at all."
  • 44 percent of all those polled approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president, compared to 51 percent who disapprove.

"The poll was also conducted prior to Senate Republicans' breakdown this week in their efforts to repeal and replace the 2010 Affordable Care Act, but the survey showed slightly more voters disapprove of the effort (43 percent) than support it (41 percent)," wrote Politico's Steven Shephard.

Here is how the rest of the poll breaks down:

  • 40 percent of those polled believe Congress should begin impeachment proceedings to remove Trump for office, compared to 46 percent who disagree.
  • 60 percent said the nation is headed on the wrong track, compared to 40 percent who said it is moving in the right direction.

Politico surveyed 1,994 registered voters from July 13-15. The margin of error is plus or minute 2 percentage points.
