According to a Washington Post/ABC poll, unifying the Republican base was never at the top of Donald Trump's priority list after securing the nomination, and the numbers released Monday seem to reflect that.

The GOP nominee is losing support among Republicans: Only 79 percent of Republican-leaning voters support Trump, according to the Post.

With the GOP convention next month, the poll results spell trouble for Trump within his own party:
  • Just 69 percent of Republicans who supported a different candidate in the GOP primary say they support Trump; 13 percent of those support Hillary Clinton; 11 percent support neither.
  • Nearly a third of Republican voters say Trump is unqualified for office; 18 percent say he does not represent their beliefs.
  • Meanwhile, 88 percent of Democratic-leaning voters say they support Clinton.
  • 70 percent of Americans, in general, are anxious about a Trump presidency.
Back in May, Trump told ABC News that he's "very different than everybody else, perhaps, that's ever run for office.

"Does the party have to be together? Does it have to be unified? I actually don't think so," Trump told ABC, reports Red State.

According to the poll, Libertarian Gary Johnson is siphoning off disaffected Republican voters and Bernie Sanders supporters have flocked to Clinton.

Just 8 percent of Sanders' supporters side with Trump now, down from 20 percent in May, the Post reports.

The poll surveyed 836 registered voters.
