Poll: 53 Percent Say Trump Trying to Derail Russia Probe

A majority of voters believe President Donald Trump is trying to derail the special counsel's Russia investigation, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.

However, voters are divided nearly evenly as to whether congressional Republicans are also trying to obstruct the Russia probe.

The results, according to Quinnipiac:

• 53 percent say Trump is trying to derail or obstruct the Russia probe.
• 41 percent don't believe Trump is trying to derail or obstruct.
• 56 percent of Independents believe Trump is trying to derail or obstruct.
• 46 percent say Republicans also are trying to derail or obstruct.
• 44 percent say Republicans are not.

Further, voters overall have a favorable attitude toward special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

Those results, according to Quinnipiac:

• 56 percent overall say Mueller's probe is fair.
• 46 percent of Republicans say Mueller's probe is not fair; 35 percent say it is.
• 57 percent of Independents believe Mueller's probe is fair.
• 50 percent of voters overall say Mueller's probe is legitimate.
• 42 percent say Mueller's probe is a witch hunt.
• 54 percent of Independents say it's legitimate.

"Special counsel Robert Mueller is not out to get President Donald Trump, American voters say, but they do feel the president is out to get Mueller," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"Despite the beating they've taken from the White House, the judiciary and the intelligence communities are considered a lot more trustworthy than the Oval Office and the Fourth Estate," Malloy wrote.

From Feb. 2- 5, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,333 voters nationwide with a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
