Only 34 percent of Americans believe Donald Trump will be a "good" or "very good" president compared to 36 percent who say he will be a "poor" president, a new CBS News poll reveals.

The poll results are sharply divided along party lines, but still lower than Trump's predecessors.

"Trump ends the election year with far lower expectations than his two most recent predecessors did," CBS News reports. In December 2008, 63 percent of Americans thought Barack Obama would make a good (34 percent) or very good (29 percent) president, while just 7 percent expected a poor performance. Less than half thought George W. Bush would make a good president in December 2000, but just 14 percent expected him to be a poor president.

Here is what the poll found:

Those who believe Trump will be good or very good:

  • Republicans: 70 percent.
  • Democrats: 10 percent.
  • Independents: 31 percent.

Those who rated Trump poorly:

  • Republicans: 8 percent.
  • Democrats: 60 percent.
  • Independents: 35 percent.

Those who believe Trump will bring "real change" in Washington:

  • Republicans: 87 percent.
  • Democrats: 44 percent.
  • Independents: 59 percent.

Those who believe Trump will make decisions to further the interests of Americans:

  • Republicans: 86 percent.
  • Democrats: 20 percent.
  • Independents: 49 percent.

Those who approve of his Cabinet selections:

  • Republicans: 77 percent.
  • Democrats: 13 percent.
  • Independents: 39 percent.

Those who think Trump uses Twitter too much:

  • Republicans: 41 percent.
  • Democrats: 78 percent.
  • Independents: 58 percent.

Those who believe it's necessary for Trump to publicly release his tax returns:

  • Republicans: 30 percent.
  • Democrats: 84 percent.
  • Independents: 60 percent.

The poll was conducted by telephone Dec. 9-13 among a random sample of 1,259 adults nationwide, including 1,117 registered voters.
