In responding to a tweet by Fox News' "Fox & Friends," President Donald Trump gave an explanation for why claims his 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia were a "witch hunt."

"Firm behind anti-Trump dossier also worked for Russia, Senate witness says," read a posting by "Fox & Friends" early Saturday morning.

Trump retweeted the post and responded why Russia would not have backed him in his 2016 race for the White House.

"In other words, Russia was against Trump in the 2016 Election - and why not, I want strong military & low oil prices. Witch Hunt!" Trump wrote.

The Senate witness "Fox & Friends" was referring to was Hermitage Capital Management CEO Bill Browder who on Thursday told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee the firm that produced a discredited dossier on Trump during last year's presidential race also worked for the Russian government.

Fusion GPS was the research firm that produced the dossier. Their ties to the Russian government came into question regarding their involvement in a meeting that was arranged in June of 2016 with Donald Trump, Jr. and a Russian attorney.

Reports claim the attorney, whose representative had suggested had information to share that was unflattering to Democratic presidential challenger Hillary Clinton, had ties to Fusion GPS and the Kremlin. The meeting was also attended by Trump's son-in-law and current White House adviser Jared Kushner.

Last week the committee subpoenaed Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson. On Tuesday, the panel revoked the subpoena in exchange for Simpson agreeing to talk to lawmakers behind closed doors.
