Only 40 percent of registered voters approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing, the lowest rating since he entered the White House, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday.
The approval rate is 12 percentage points lower than the high-water mark of 52 percent set in March. Last month his approval rating was at 46 percent.
Other results from the poll show:
- The percentage of those who approve strongly, a measure of the size of Trump's most fervent supporters, has fallen to a new low of 18 percent. Last month it was at 24 percent.
- Among those who said they voted for Trump in the presidential election, his "strong approval" rating has dropped to 41 percent from 49 percent last month.
- His overall approval among self-identified Trump voters has fallen to 81 percent from 86 percent last week.
- Among Republican voters, the president's job approval has slipped to 76 percent from 79 percent last week.
"Unbated by the turbulence of the last six months, there remains a core base of ardent Trump supporters," Morning Consult co-founder and Chief Research Officer Kyle Dropp said. "However, that base has unquestionably declined since the president took office. In late January, 56 percent of Trump voters strongly approved of the president, and just 1 percent disapproved. Today, 41 percent strongly approve and 17 percent disapprove."
The results of the Politico/Morning Consult poll show a similar trend to several other surveys released in recent days, all of which indicate a decreasing backing for the president and approval ratings that are at or near each poll's lowest ever mark since Trump entered the White House.
The Politico/Morning Consult poll was conducted Aug. 3-6, surveying 1,992 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
