Donald Trump’s pivotal week that featured a staff shakeup has allowed the Republican nominee to get back in a race that "should get back to even" by Labor Day, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told ABC "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday.
"I think he's had a great week," Priebus told ABC of Trump’s recent resurgence amid staff changes and a week of prewritten policy-based speeches. "I think he's been on message. He's shown maturity as a candidate. I think that he is getting into a groove. I think he likes the new style that he has been out on the campaign trail producing and speaking of.
"So, I think he's done great. And I think what you're going to see is these polls will begin to tighten in the next couple of weeks and by Labor Day or thereafter, I think you're going to be back to an even race if we continue down this path."
Trump has trailed Clinton steadily in the polls since the conventions in July , especially in some key battleground states, perhaps because of his lack of political correctness and inexperience in campaigning for a general election.
A new Trump regime led by newly tapped CEO Steve Bannon and campaign manager Kellyanne Conway has aided a relative "pivot," in Trump’s behaviors, delivery and focus.
"I think people can pivot into different roles, and ultimately, the person in charge of Donald Trump's campaign is Donald Trump," Priebus told ABC. "The last few days, I think everyone has seen that we have a continued pathway that Donald Trump has been pursuing, which I think is much better for this campaign. I think he's doing great. I think he's on a great pathway to — to recalibrating the campaign and getting this thing tight.
"And I obviously just saw Kellyanne Conway do, I think, a really fantastic job in pivoting and showing the direction of this campaign that we're going. And Donald Trump has been disciplined and mature. And I think he's going to get this thing back on track. And also, tight and ahead as we move through September."
