Nearly six out of 10 registered voters favor a special prosecutor to investigate ties between President Trump and Russia, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll.
The results:
- 56 percent favor special prosecutor.
- 30 percent oppose it.
- 13 percent do not have an opinion.
- 39 percent of Republicans favor it.
- 54 percent of Independents also favor it.
Opinions are evenly split about whether Russia influenced the election and break along party lines – 41 percent say Russia did, 42 percent say it did not.
By party:
- 71 percent of Republicans say there was no Russian influence.
- 69 percent of Democrats think there was Russian influence.
- 35 percent of Independents think there was influence; 40 percent say no.
"While many Republicans do not believe that Russia influenced the 2016 election, they aren't necessarily opposed to investigating the idea," Morning Consult Chief Research Officer Kyle Dropp said. "Only 16 percent of Republicans believe Russia influenced the 2016 election, but 39 percent support a special prosecutor being appointed to investigate ties between the Trump campaign and Russia."
The survey began late last week, hours after Attorney General Jeff Sessions said he would recuse himself from any investigation involving Russia's involvement in the election.
Sessions came under extreme pressure to recuse himself – Democrats called for his resignation – after admitting to two meetings with the Russian ambassador to the U.S.
The survey found 29 percent believed Sessions to be truthful, and 38 percent thought he was not truthful; another 32 percent were unsure.
The Politico/Morning Consult poll surveyed 1,992 registered voters online and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
