Quinnipiac Poll: 2018 Midterms Will Be Referendum on Impeachment

Quinnipiac Poll: 2018 Midterms Will Be Referendum on Impeachment

By    |   Friday, 27 April 2018 02:28 PM EDT

Voters think that the 2018 midterm elections will decide whether or not President Donald Trump faces impeachment proceedings, according to the latest Quinnipiac poll.

If Democrats win a majority in the House of Representatives in November, more than two-thirds of their supporters hope that they will start the impeachment process, which must begin in the House.

  • 38 percent of voters want impeachment to begin if Dems win a majority
  • 70 percent of Democrats say the same
  • 6 percent of Republicans say the same
  • 38 percent of independents say the same

However, Republicans continue to back Trump. The vast majority view special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference is a "political witch hunt," and just over half believe the mainstream media is now an "enemy of the people," and not an "important part of democracy." Additionally, the overwhelming majority of GOP voters trust Trump to tell them the truth about important issues, over the news media.

  • 82 percent of GOP voters think Mueller probe is a witch hunt
  • 51 percent think the media is an enemy of the people
  • 81 percent think that Trump is more trustworthy than the news

Quinnipiac polled 1,193 voters across the country by phone from April 20-24, with a margin of error of  3.4 percentage points.
