Either Democrat running for president would beat Republican Donald Trump in New Jersey, a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday shows.
Bernie Sanders ran better in general election matchups with Trump, but Hillary Clinton topped the Vermont senator among likely voters in the Democratic primary, set for June 7:
- Clinton over Trump, 45-38 percent
- Sanders over Trump, 49-37 percent
- Clinton over Sanders by 54-40 percent
The gender, age and racial gaps were wide in the Clinton-Trump matchup:
- Men backed Trump, 46 - 36 percent
- Women backed Clinton, 53 - 32 percent
- White voters, Trump 48 - 36 percent
- Black voters, Clinton, 84-3 percent
In addition, Clinton came out ahead with all age groups except for voters over 65 years old, who backed Trump 49 - 40 percent.
There was also a wide divide among party groups:
- Democrats, Clinton 84 - 7 percent
- Republicans, Trump 78 - 4 percent
- Independent voters, 41 percent for Clinton and 39 percent for Trump
New Jersey voters also gave Clinton and Trump unfavorable ratings:
- Clinton, 38-56 percent
- Trump, 35-58 percent
The poll was conducted of 1,989 New Jersey voters from May 10-16, and carried an overall margin of error of 2.2 percentage points, and included 696 likely Democratic primary voters with a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.
