Only 36 percent of American voters approve of President Donald Trump's performance, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

His disapproval rating was 58 percent among the 1,078 voters surveyed between Thursday and Tuesday.

The new results compare to a 40-56 percent approval rating in an April 19 poll that followed Trump's decision to unleash 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles on Syria in response to President Bashar al-Assad's use of chemical weapons.

Here are the results:

How would you rate Trump's first 100 days?

  • Mainly a failure: 58 percent.
  • Mainly a success: 38 percent.

Do you approve or disapprove of Trump's performance on these issues:

  • Economy:
    • Disapprove: 52 percent.
    • Approve: 40 percent.
  • North Korea:
    • Disapprove: 48 percent.
    • Approve: 44 percent.
  • Foreign policy:
    • Disapprove: 59 percent.
    • Approve: 36 percent.
  • Terrorism:
    • Disapprove: 48 percent.
    • Approve: 45 percent.
  • Immigration:
    • Disapprove: 62 percent.
    • Approve: 35 percent.

"There is no way to spin or sugarcoat these sagging numbers," said Tim Malloy, the poll's assistant director.

The Quinnipiac University poll has a margin of error of 3 percent.
