Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has increased his lead to 11 percentage points over his challenger, Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, in a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
Cruz now holds a 50 percent to 39 percent advantage, while in the same survey just one month ago he was only ahead by three percentage points, 47 percent to 44 percent.
Quinnipiac Poll assistant director Peter Brown explained the surge by saying Cruz is "apparently benefitting from a nationwide Republican mini-move . . . Trump's Texas numbers also have climbed during those six weeks moving from a nine-point deficit on job approval to an even split today. It is hard not to see a pro-Cruz effect there."
Other results from the survey showed:
- Cruz received a big boost in support from men. In that category, he currently leads O'Rourke 57 percent to 35 percent, while a month ago it was 51 percent to 40 percent.
- O'Rourke's advantage among Independents fell from 51 percent in April to 43 percent in the latest poll.
- The Democrat's edge among Hispanic voters has been erased, with Cruz now leading 46 to 44 in that category after O'Rourke led 51 percent to 33 percent among Hispanics last month.
- Texas voters approve of the job Cruz is doing 52 percent to 39 percent and give him a 49 percent to 38 percent favorability rating.
- O'Rourke gets a 30 percent to 19 percent favorability rating, but 50 percent of voters don't know enough about him to form an opinion of him.
The poll was conducted from May 23-29. Quinnipiac University surveyed 961 Texas voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percentage points, including the design effect.
