Pro-Rand Paul Group Unleashes Fiery Attack Ad Over Patriot Act

By    |   Friday, 29 May 2015 02:20 PM EDT

The announcer, in his best professional wrestling promo voice, snarls, "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!" while an eagle spits flames and the head of Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., appears pasted atop the body of a muscle-popping strongman in the new attack ad from Paul's America's Liberty PAC.

It's all about the approaching Sunday Senate debate over the Patriot Act, which expires at midnight Sunday if Congress can't find a way to extend its provisions, and the ad pulls no punches in warning that "The Brawl For Liberty" will be a tag-team cage match you won't want to miss.

Story continues below video.

The cartoonish ad pits Paul, the "Defender of Freedom," against President Barack Obama, the "head of the Washington spy machine" and his "so-called conservative accomplices," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., taking a poke at Cruz as the "capitulating Canadian," referring to his birthplace, and saying Graham is "trying to read your emails while doing donuts in a 1997 Geo Metro while it’s on fire," The Hill reports.

The ad, which Salon calls "gloriously awful," even shows the Capitol dome exploding from the furious debate the battle over the Patriot Act is expected to generate.

Last week, Paul filibustered and managed to block reauthorization of the Patriot Act allowing the warrantless collection of Americans' emails and phone calls.

His 10-hour filibuster was opposed by many in his own party, like Cruz, who support a compromise bill, the USA Freedom Act, which would allow continued collection of data overseen by the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which Paul opposes, National Review reports.

The House, by a vote of 338-88 on May 13, approved the USA Freedom Act, which stops the National Security Agency from bulk collection of Americans' phone records and requires the NSA to seek court approval for those emails and phone records it wants to receive, The Wall Street Journal reports.

So the stage is set for the "biggest brawl for liberty of the century," The Washington Post notes that the wild ad states, and the "WWE-inspired" ad obviously is aimed at declaring Paul's intention to continue his fight, no matter the parties of his opposition.
