Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says speakers who address the Republican National Convention this week should go out of their way to embrace the nation's immigrants.

In an interview with WKU, the public radio service of Western Kentucky University, the former Republican presidential candidate, said the GOP has to show "that our party is welcoming to all people, no matter where you came from, or where you immigrated from."

He added: That we look at immigrants seeking freedom and prosperity as assets to our country, and that we're the party of opportunity, and the party that wants to alleviate poverty through the creation of jobs."

Paul said he disagrees with Donald Trump's temporary ban of all Muslim immigrants from entering the country.

But he added that the U.S. needs to "slow down the flow" of immigrants and make sure the country "knows who all is coming in the country, and what their intentions are … I think we need to enforce more of what's in our current immigration rules."
