Most voters, when asked who is to blame for separating the families found illegally crossing the border, blamed the parents and not the government, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll.

Rasmussen asked voters: "When families are arrested and separated after attempting to enter the United States illegally, who is more to blame – the parents for breaking the law or the federal government for enforcing the law?"

  • 54 percent said parents.
  • 35 percent blame the government.
  • 11 percent are not sure.

Rasmussen did not ask about separating the children and parents of migrant families who legally seek asylum at a port of entry into the United States.

Republicans were much more likely to blame parents, while Democrats tend to blame the government.

  • 82 percent of Republicans blame parents.
  • 13 percent blame the government.
  • 28 percent of Democrats blame parents.
  • 60 percent blame the government.

Rasmussen did ask if President Donald Trump's administration is "too aggressive or not aggressive enough in trying to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States?"

  • 49 percent said too aggressive.
  • 25 percent said not aggressive enough.
  • 21 percent said about right.
  • 4 percent are not sure.

And Rasmussen also asked voters to say whether they agreed or disagreed with this statement: "The United States will not be a migrant camp. And it will not be a refugee-holding facility - it won't be."

  • 54 percent agree.
  • 30 percent disagree.
  • 16 percent are not sure.

Rasmussen surveyed 1,000 likely voters from June 19-20, 2018. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
