GOP Eyes Turning Blue New York Red

By    |   Thursday, 05 December 2013 09:05 AM EST

Republican leaders in New York are targeting House seats outside New York City as Democrats deal with the backlash from Obamacare's troubled launch.

"The topsy-turvy nature of what’s going on in D.C. is putting things in play in New York, even though they shouldn’t be,” GOP consultant Brendan Quinn told Roll Call.

Republicans believe that it would take a major swing to the right to oust Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand in the near future. Even so, Republican Reps. Chris Collins, Chris Gibson and Michael G. Grimm are being heralded by party insiders as future contenders for the Senate, Roll Call reports.

However, the party sees a chance for potential victories in campaigns for upstate and suburban House seats now held by Democrats.

The seats drawing the most attention from Republicans are now held by Reps. Steve Israel and Carolyn McCarthy. According to Roll Call, GOP state Sen. Jack Martins and Hempstead City Councilman Anthony J. Santino are both potential challengers to McCarthy.

But state GOP heavyweights also list Long Island Democratic Rep. Timothy Bishop as a primary target.

Elsewhere in the Empire State, former GOP Rep. Nan Hayworth has launched a comeback campaign to oust her 2012 rival, Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney in the 18th District. And upstate, local powerhouse Republicans are hoping Democratic Rep. Bill Owens can be upended by former Bush administration aide Elise Stefanik.
